As long as you have a supported tuner card, you can easily record television on your PC using TV recording software. There are various media center applications that provide TV recording capabilities, although today we’ll focus on specialized PVR programs (personal video recorders) to help you choose the best TV recording software for Windows.

Even better, Kodi supports all major platforms, specifically Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. However, keep in mind that if you want to record live television with Kodi, you will need to install a PVR plugin. Luckily, there are quite a few of those, MediaPortal, NextPVR, and MythTV being some of the best.

NextPVR

NextPVR is a free Windows app that’s focused on live TV recording and playback and it can be used as a backend server with various media centers. However, it can also be used as a standalone application thanks to its straightforward interface that’s equipped with a TV guide.

The service is called Plex DVR and it allows you to watch and record live TV using Plex’s client apps that work as a front end. It can be used with various types of tuners and also comes with a built-in TV guide. You can also rewind, fast forward and pause live playback.

It’s worth mentioning Plex DVR is only available for Plex Pass subscribers, a $4.99 monthly subscription.

MediaPortal

MediaPortal is an open-source media center that offers live TV recording and supports an impressive number of tuner cards. It also includes its own server setup and exclusively supports Windows.

The application provides a comprehensive TV gide with channel management, a search function, and a recording scheduler. On top of that, it lets you watch over 10,000 tuned channels and offers multiple recording types, as well as the ability to customize pre and post-record options.
